Resolution on the intensification of the conflict between Greece and Turkey

ICOR Europe, 22 January 2021

The clash of Greek and Turkish warships in recent weeks and months shows that they do not shy away from war in the fight for control of natural gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean. The fascist Turkish state, which is increasingly assuming the role of the counter-revolutionary spearhead in the region, has long been openly declaring its claim to explore for gas reserves and all other marine resources in the Mediterranean, just like the other riparian states. Although mineral resources are at stake, this conflict is also an expression of the general aspiration to extend their spheres of (political, economic, geostrategic) power and influence.

Since the discovery of oil and natural gas deposits in the area, all the countries bordering on the area have been trying to expand their maritime territory to the detriment of others. Temporary alliances are forged against others. Imperialist countries, which have no maritime border at all in this area, are heavily involved. They fuel the conflicts among the riparian states, currently between Turkey and Greece. While they are basically pursuing a warmongering policy, they hypocritically pretend to be peace brokers! Even if the situation is alleviated for a time, the conflict is not resolved, but continues to smoulder and can escalate again at any time!

The conflict poses a real threat of war, against which the working masses must struggle. Particularly because of the involvement of the EU and NATO, a military conflict - and its escalation to date - would immediately also have a global dimension and pose a serious threat to world peace.

Lenin demands: "The proletariat struggles against war and will always struggle against it unremittingly, without, how ever, forgetting for a moment that war can be abolished only with the complete abolition of society’s division into classes ..." (Lenin “European Capital and the Autocracy”)

The ICOR resolution on 6 August and 1 September (Anti-War Day) calls: “Fight imperialism, and end military provocations and war exercises all over the world!”

In this situation, it is of special importance that we revolutionaries and proletarian internationalists position ourselves together beyond our national borders, against any imperialist aggression and form a united front, in Turkey as well as in Greece, against the warmongers and their backers. Proletarian internationalism means: no support for the predatory policies of the respective government and rulers in Turkey as in Greece; there is no "just" war fought for imperialist interests. We know: In an unjust war the main enemy is in your own country!

The workers and masses in Turkey as in Greece reach out their hands in the struggle for peace, freedom and socialism!
