Rana Plaza Day Observed

The 7th anniversary of the Rana Plaza collapse, the worst-ever tragedy in the readymade garment industry of the globe, is being observed today at Bangladesh by Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre amid the corona virus pandemic.

After paying floral tribute at the Central Shaheed Minar, today in a short speech General Secretary of the Garment Workers' Trade Union Centre Comrade Joly Talukder said, although it is important to stay home to avoid infection, it is very important to stand up somewhere and talk in public on this day. Not just to pay tribute or demand justice, compensation and safe workplace. In this epidemic, Rana Plaza Day is back today with even greater relevance. She said this relevance is just not limited within the garment workers; Rather, it applies to all employees working in the private sector, self-employed hardworking people, farmers, village laborers. "The state does not value the lives of any of us," She added. Which we are feeling more clearly in this epidemic than at any other time. Rana Plaza Day is the most appropriate day to protest and say those words.

On 24 April 2013, Rana Plaza, an illegally-constructed building in Savar of Bangladesh which housed five RMG factories, collapsed, killing, at least 1138 people and injuring over 2,000 others.
