Declaration of solidarity with the miners in Ukraine
4th May 2017 was marked by the beginning of a new and the so far largest workers' protests in Ukraine of the 21st century. On this day the night shifts of three mines of the iron ore combine Krivoj Rog refused to leave the mine. Workers' assemblies were held underground. The miners put forward their demands, such as raising wages for heavy workers to 1.000$, at least in order to return to the wage level of 2012!
On 6 May miners of the Artem mine joined the protest actions of the iron ore combine. On 10 May 200 workers of the mine Jubilejnaja remained underground. What is remarkable is that the miners' movement has developed in privatized mines, among others of the corporation groups Evraz, Russia and Arcelor Mittal. Others belong to Ukrainian oligarch capitalists. Now workers' unrests are increasing, also in the state-owned mines of the Lwow-Wolynsk-coal basin.
A report from Ukraine states: “It is positive that the workers of Ukraine now stand up to defend their social-economic rights, and that they do not allow their movement to be hijacked by any bourgeois-political party. In this situation it is necessary like never before to develop maximum structures of horizontal coordination between the protesting workers, as well as to call upon the workers all over the world for international solidarity with the protesting workers of Ukraine.”
Even though most of the protests have been ended for the time being, ICOR calls for broad solidarity with the miners in Ukraine today and in the future. Send solidarity messages, inform about the strike movement in Ukraine! Get in contact with the trade unions and discuss solidarity actions!
