Resolution on the general strike in Greece: IN SUPPORT OF THE STRIKE BY THE WORKERS OF GREECE

ICOR 30 December 2015

ICOR congratulates the workers and toiling masses of Greece for the massive show of strength and unity on 12th November 2015. This was the first nation-wide strike under the Tsipras Government. The call for the strike was given by ADEDY (the union of the public sector workers) and by GSEE (the union of many private sector workers) and was also supported by PAME (the union associated with the CP Greece). The main demands emanated from the third round of austerity cuts imposed by the Tsipras Government, by which, wages and pensions are likely to be cut up to 40%. There are also cuts in the amounts allotted to education which are leading to many teachers and other school workers being put out of work. The strike is also a warning to the Government and the EU and the lender banks not to impose the further insistence on mortgage payments which will leave thousands homeless. The EU and the lender banks are putting such payments as conditions for the loans required to recapitalise the Greek banking system.

It must be remembered that all these austerity cuts are being imposed on the cusp of winter when the rising fuel prices will make basic necessary heating out of reach of many people. The push on the front of taxes and the cut in wages will combine in this season to worsen the misery of the people if the EU and the lending banks are allowed to have their way.

In a cynical twist, the Tsipras Government issued a statement in support of the strike and called on people to come out in the streets. Its justification that it was being forced to implement an unfair agreement should at the same time deprive these actions of their effect. It was such provacation by the Government which likely caused the violent incidents seen in Athens. 20000 people are reported to come out in the demonstrations in Athens and the rallies are said to have been even relatively larger in smaller towns. Public transport, ports, airlines, and even the Athens metro were at a standstill. It is reported that 65% to 70% of the workers in the public sector joined the strike.

We once again congratulate the workers of Greece and call upon all democratic workers all over the world to come out in solidarity with the Greek people against the austerity measures being imposed upon them by the forces of imperialism and finance capital acting through the EU and the Tsipras Government.
