Call of the ICOR for the International Day of Struggle to Save the Natural Environment on 5 December 2015

ICOR, 2 December 2015

The year 2014 and already the first six months in 2015 again broke all heat records since 1880. With annually 980, the number of regional environmental catastrophes is clearly above the average of the past 30 years. For millions of people worldwide they are becoming a permanent phenomenon, threatening life and existence. Dangerous tipping points of the world climate system are  presently threatening to be exceeded. But the whole series of UN climate conferences of the past years had no concrete results except for dramatic words and false promises. Those in power prove to be neither willing nor able to take serious measures for the sustainable protection of the natural environment.

The growing concern among the masses about the accelerated advance of the transition to a global environmental catastrophe and the criticism of the willful and unscrupulous politics of the ruling international finance capital and the imperialist governments is fully justified. They sacrifice the natural foundations of humankind on the altar of capitalist profit maximization!

The 21st UN Climate Conference in Paris from 30 November to 11 December 2015 is now being built up to be the “summit of the last chance“. But instead of a binding climate protection agreement it only aims at “voluntary self-commitment declarations” which are non-binding and have long failed .  And it orients to adapting and justifying the further combustion of fossil fuels until at least 2100. The so-called “2-degrees-goal” (centigrade) already accepts the partial destruction of the foundations of life for hundreds of millions of people, among other things from a rising sea level by 5 to 8 meters.

Comprehensive measures for climate protection must not be postponed any longer! Immediate expansion of renewable energies! Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 70 to 90 percent until the year 2030! Radical stop of deforestation, especially of the tropical rain forests and large scale reforestation programs! Shutdown of all nuclear power plants at the expense of the operators – worldwide!

The masses do not want to perish in barbarianism, and they put up resistance:  for example thousands of workers, peasants, environmental activists in Peru against environmentally destructive copper mining; hundred of thousands worldwide against imperialist “free”trade agreements; mass protests against the construction of the worldwide largest nuclear power plant in India or the irreversible destruction of the tropical rain forests; resistance of peasants, workers and broad social strata against the highly dangerous gas fracking (hydraulic fracturing) in Poland, France, Ireland etc. For an international front of active resistance to protect the natural environment!

This struggle also needs a societal perspective. “Save the environment from profit economy – revolutionary solutions are necessary!” Only the struggle for a liberated socialist society can prevent the environmental catastrophe threatening through capitalism and can organize a paradigm change in the mode of production, consumption and the way of life.

The ICOR calls for preparing and organizing militant manifestations and broad unities of action of workers, peasants, women, youth, environmental activists etc. worldwide on this year's international day of environmental struggle, 5 December 2015. And it mobilizes to the international mass rally in Paris on 12 December. It a also welcomes and supports the protest activities of a four-week-long international anti-fracking campaign starting on 4 November.
