ICOR Call for the International Day of Struggle to Save the Natural Environment on 6 December 2014

12 November 2014

On 21 September 675,000 people demonstrated in 162 countries for global climate protection. The growing concern among the masses about the accelerated advance of the transition to a global environmental catastrophe and the criticism of the willful and ruthless policy of the solely ruling international finance capital and the imperialist governments is totally justified. All over the world protests against genetically engineered food and seeds, soy production and other agricultural products not for the benefit of the peoples, against fracking, wasteful mass production of bad quality and the waste of resources and the destruction of natural resources like water sources are also enlivening.

With an emission of 36 billion tons of the main greenhouse-gas  CO² worldwide a new record was reached in 2013, 61 percent above the starting point of the Kyoto protocol of 1990. The struggle of the rivaling imperialist forces and blocks to control the world market, the stocks of raw materials and strategic geographical positions is currently intensifying, also in the form of open wars. This also has serious and partly irreversible consequences with the destruction of our natural foundations of life. International finance capital endangers human life with more and more reckless technologies like gas-fracking, extractive surface mining, deep-sea drilling for oil and gas, the planned massive expansion of coal power stations and nuclear energy, as well as the production of new gases that damage the ozone layer. The results are an accelerated melting of ice and glaciers, warming and acidification of the oceans, extinction of species, destruction of forests – all this requires immediate action. Monster storms like Hayan (Yolanda), gigantic forest fires, massive floods worldwide, at the same time spreading of deserts and arid areas reveal the regional environmental disasters as harbingers and accelerators of the global climate catastrophe. An immediate program of joint struggle of the working-class and environmental movement has to be put on the agenda worldwide: for renewable energies and vigorous climate and environmental protection measures, for environmentally compatible and healthy jobs, for sufficient and healthy food.

The fact becomes clearly visible that either capitalism must die or humanity. It becomes increasingly apparent that the social issue and the environmental issue are closely connected. The monopolies are blackmailing their workforces worldwide with the criminal alternative “jobs or environmental protection”. They are boycotting future technologies like closed-loop economy, regenerative energies and alternative drive systems. They exploit labor and health to an unbearable extent. Out of greed for profit they pursue a production which can only further exist through uninterrupted senseless growth. They are poisoning humankind and nature. Only through the international revolutionary movement can the social and environmental issue be solved together. Only in a socialist society will the willful destruction of our natural foundations of human life by international finance capital be stopped and the unity of humankind and nature be sustainably strengthened and developed to a higher level. That is why the struggle for the protection of the environment and against the imperialist politics causing an ecological catastrophe has become an important part of today's class struggle.

The whole series of UN Climate Conferences of recent years did not achieve any concrete results aside from words of pathos and false promises. The 20th world climate conference in Lima from 1 to 12 December 2014 only has the task to prepare the conference in Paris in 2015, for which a new worldwide climate protection agreement is vaguely promised. At the same time, profitable emissions trading and haggling over a “green climate fund” is being continued. This is not about preventing an environmental catastrophe, but about an allegedly possible “adaptation to climate change” - a deadly illusion! In this situation the international industrial proletariat has a great responsibility to be at the vanguard of mass confrontations and struggles. Without the rejection of imperialist environmentalism, greenwashing and modern anti-communism the establishment of an international front of struggle to save the environment from the profit economy will not succeed.

The revolutionary working-class movement must develop a program of action for the protection of the natural environment on the national and international level. Through active resistance many concrete cases of environmental destruction can doubtlessly be repaired and the tendency towards the environmental catastrophe can be inhibited.

The masses do not want to perish in barbarianism and they put up resistance – all revolutionary and Marxist-Leninist organizations and parties must realize that only the worldwide victory of socialism can prevent the capitalist environmental catastrophe.

In such a society, a change of paradigm in the mode of production, consumption and life must take place and the unity of humanity and nature must become the guideline.” (From the resolution on the environmental issue of the 2nd ICOR World Conference, April 2014)

The ICOR calls up to prepare and conduct militant manifestations and broad unities of actions of workers, peasants, people with indigenous and African roots, women's organizations, youth, defenders of the environment and environmentalists on the international day of struggle for the environment, this year on 6 December 2014. Mobilization for the international big demonstration on 10. December in Lima, Peru. Comprehensive measures to protect our climate may no longer be postponed:

  1. Immediate development of environmentally compatible energies! Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 70 to 90 percent until the year 2030. Radical stop to the clearing of forests, especially the tropical rain forests, and large-scale reforestation programs.
  2. International and immediately implementable agreements for the protection of the world's oceans.
  3. Immediate shutdown of all nuclear power plants at the expense of the operators – no further nuclear power plants, worldwide!
  4. Immediate and unconditional destruction of all nuclear weapons!
  5. Save the environment from the profit economy of the monopolies!
  6. For an international front of active resistance to protect the natural environment!
  7. Fight for a people's democratic and socialist society in which the unity of humankind and nature will become the guideline!
