Active resistance for a ban on fracking - worldwide!

ICOR-Resolution, 22 September 2014

On Saturday, 11 October, Global Frackdown Day, anti-fracking activists will be taking to the streets and organizing blockades and information events. On all continents, in particular in North America and Europe, resistance against fracking (hydraulic fracturing) is developing. Big energy corporations like ExxonMobile, BP, BASF with its subsidiary Wintershall or CEP (Central European Petroleum) let shale be fractured apart thousands of meters deep in order to extract gas deposits from the earth. The EU program HORIZON shall provide subsidies for energy monopolies totaling 80 billion € until 2020 for fracking as „safe, secure, clean and efficient energy“ generation. The only thing secure are the maximum profits beckoning the energy monopolies.

„Risky“ is the worst thing European bourgeois media call fracking. Actually, in the United States entire landscapes have been devastated and made uninhabitable:

  1. With a mixture of water, sand and chemicals injected at high pressure the groundwater has been permanently contaminated and deeply lying eco-systems have been destroyed. Millions of people and animals have been deprived of access to clean drinking water, even from rivers. 25% of the toxic cocktail were pushed back to the surface and contaminate the air.

  2. Radioactive substances extracted from the depths have carcinogenic effects. Several earthquakes have already been observed in close proximity to the bore holes.

  3. Burning the gas, which usually contains methane, increases CO2 emissions and thus also the threatening climate catastrophe.

The filling of the oceans and continents with waste, the destruction of the rain forests and the ozone layer, the risky extraction of gas, coal, oil, uranium and other raw materials cause heavy damage to the biosphere and a growing, chronic poisoning of the masses worldwide. (from the resolution of the 2nd World Conference of ICOR, on the struggle against the threatening global environmental catastrophe from April 2014, published on the website of ICOR). Thus, fracking becomes a further essential factor for the accelerated transition to a global environmental catastrophe.

In order to make fracking acceptable for the population, the prospect of „clean fracking“ and the protection of drinking water areas is proposed. But groundwater cannot be confined and fracking only works if a toxic mixture is added. Also, „test“ drillings are aimed at having an appeasing effect, but they actually lead to accomplished facts. For preserving our natural environment and thus also our human existence, there can only be one demand:

Ban fracking - worldwide! Change over to 100% renewable energies!

While countries like France or Bulgaria or individual communities and regional governments have banned fracking so far, this shall be threatened by corresponding proceedings according to the will of the European Commission. Only to make sure that fracking yields maximum profits. Without any regard for the destruction of the foundations of human life by the imperialist system. All appeals made with good intentions to the “rationality“ of the ruling class won't help. The resolution of the 2nd World Conference of ICOR states:

In this situation the environmental movement must reorient and rebuild itself internationally. The basis must be the active resistance to save the environment from the profit economy. The environmental movement must be open for a societal order free from the exploitation of humans and nature.“

Marx and Engels already emphasized the unity of humanity and nature as fundamental for a progressing societal development.

The ICOR must commit itself to working in its own ranks and among the masses for a new, higher environmental consciousness concerning the urgency of the environmental question and its solution, in unity with preparing and carrying out the international socialist revolution worldwide. Without defending and further developing the lessons of Marxism-Leninism about the fundamental unity of humanity and nature, without defending the socialist achievements in environmental policy, without struggling to preserve the natural foundations of life, today the international socialist revolution can no longer be prepared and carried out successfully.“

It was an achievement of the Soviet Union, still socialist at that time, that after the October Revolution, in spite of huge coal and natural gas resources, hydro-power was given priority for power generation. Thus the unity of human life and nature was developed to a higher lever.

In the meantime, worldwide resistance against fracking is growing. The signing parties and organizations of ICOR Europe fully support the resistance actions and promote the building of an international resistance front against the threatening global environmental catastrophe. In order to maintain the unity of human life and nature, the imperialist system must be abolished. In this revolutionary struggle, the leading role lies with the working class. The ICOR parties are aware that only the worldwide victory of socialism can prevent the capitalist environmental catastrophe.( resolution of the 2nd World Conference of ICOR).

Save the environment from the profit economy!

Workers of all countries, unite!

Workers of all countries and oppressed peoples, unite!

Strengthen the ICOR parties!

At its founding in October 2010 the ICOR decided four annual joint days of struggle: 8 March, the international day of struggle for the liberation of women, Mayday as the international day of struggle of the working class, an international day of struggle against fascism and war on 8/9 May, 6 August or 1 September and the international day of struggle for saving the natural environment. In 2014, it will be observed on 6 December worldwide during the World Climate Conference which is taking place at the same time in Lima.
