ICOR-call for the International Day of Struggle for the Saving of the Natural Environment on 16 November 2013

25 october 2013

The transition to a worldwide climate catastrophe is accelerating at a threatening pace. In May 2013, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported CO² levels which last existed more than 10 million years ago. More and more frequent, broad parts of the world experienced heat and drought catastrophes, devastating forest fires and storms. The UN reported that in this decade 370,000 people have died as a result of climate change. The consequences will be even more devastating in the future. According to the latest calculations of the world climate council, the sea-level could rise 97 centimeters if temperatures increase by up to 5°. If the continental ice melts, the sea-level could rise several meters. Such a catastrophic development could let hundreds of millions of people become refugees and make big cities and entire countries vanish from the map. The shift of the climate zones leads to the melting of the permafrost in broad areas of Siberia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland. The melting of the glaciers has also taken on dramatic forms. All of these developments are accelerating the transition to a global environmental catastrophe which has already begun!

In face of the deep world economic and financial crisis, the international monopolies and their imperialist governments are delaying and preventing the necessary immediate measures to check the climate catastrophe for pure profit reasons and are even reversing measures that have been fought through.

In Mid-November a renewed World Climate Conference is convening in Warsaw. These climate conferences initiated by the UN attempt hypocritically to demonstrate seriousness and at the same time divert attention from the main responsibility of the monopoly profit economy for global climate change. They intend to give the impression that the imperialist governments are untiringly concerned with saving the climate. Actually, international finance capital is increasingly putting the existence of humanity at stake under the hypocritical slogan of the compatibility of ecology and economy.

Although a rapid transition to regenerative energy would be possible, the ruling powers are further relying on fossil energy or even justifying their nuclear programs demagogically, arguing with climate protection, while nuclear fusion is continuing in Chernobyl and Fukushima. The result: The emission of carbon monoxide rose by 4 % in 2012.

But the people of the world do not want to perish in the environmental catastrophe! The struggle of the working-class and popular movements in Japan forced Japanese imperialism to shut off all 52 nuclear power plants temporarily.  Whether against the construction of nuclear power plants in India or against destructive dam projects with a massive loss of rain forest and agricultural area in Chile or Brazil - millions of people have become active in the struggle for their own lives and that of Mother Earth! Miners' struggles show perspective in struggling for their concerns and for environmental protection, together with the peasants and indigenous peoples.

The ICOR calls up to prepare and conduct militant manifestations and broad unities of action for this year's international day of struggle for the environment of the ICOR. It mobilizes to the big demonstration in Warsaw on 16 November.

Comprehensive measures for climate protection are not allowed to be further postponed!

For the immediate increase of the use of environmentally protective energy! Lowering of greenhouse-gas emissions by 70 to 90 percent by the year 2020. Radical stop of the clearing of forests, especially of the tropical rain forests. For extensive reforestation programs. International agreements for immediate action for the protection of the oceans.

Immediate shutdown of nuclear power stations at the expense of those operating them – worldwide, no more nuclear plants!

Immediate and unconditional destruction of all nuclear weapons! Save the environment from the greed for profit of the monopolies!

For an international front of active resistance for the protection of the natural environment!

Struggle for a socialist society in which the unity of humankind and nature can be reestablished!
